Fifteen years ago, a homesick teenager from Phatthalung Province stood overwhelmed on the bustling streets of Bangkok, tears streaming down his face as traffic and crowds swirled around him like nothing he'd ever experienced.

Today, that same young man is preparing for one of the most significant fights in Muay Thai history, as he’ll face the legendary Nong-O Hama for the vacant ONE Flyweight Muay Thai World Title at ONE 173: Superbon vs. Noiri in Tokyo, Japan, on November 16. The transformation of Rodtang Jitmuangnon from a scared provincial boy into "The Iron Man," the most recognizable face in striking sports worldwide, stands as one of martial arts' most inspiring success stories.

The journey began with a leap of faith that would have terrified most teenagers. At very young age, Rodtang made the life-altering decision to leave everything familiar behind in pursuit of better opportunities in Thailand's capital city. For a boy who had already been fighting professionally since age 10, having started his Muay Thai journey at 7, Bangkok represented both promise and peril.

"When I moved to Bangkok from the Phatthalung Province, I cried. I was homesick. I had never seen such a crowd or traffic," Rodtang recalled, his honesty revealing the vulnerability behind the warrior persona that would eventually captivate millions of fans around the globe.

The culture shock was immediate and overwhelming. Everything that had been familiar and comfortable in his rural home environment suddenly felt foreign and intimidating in the sprawling metropolis.

"Everything was totally different between Bangkok and in the province. Everything was all new to me," he reflected, capturing the disorientation that comes with such a dramatic life change at such a young age.

But within that overwhelming newness lay the crucible that would forge one of Muay Thai's greatest champions. Rodtang quickly realized that success in Bangkok would require more than just fighting skills – it would demand a complete transformation of himself as a person.

"I had to adjust myself to the place that I lived in. I had to adjust my lifestyle, my attitude – everything. I had to learn how to be a grown man because I didn't live with my family," Rodtang explained, describing the accelerated maturation process that turned a homesick boy into a focused young warrior.

This period of adjustment became the foundation for everything that followed. Training at Jitmuangnon Gym, Rodtang channeled his homesickness and uncertainty into an unbreakable work ethic. Every technique refined, every opponent faced, every victory earned was a step further from that crying teenager on Bangkok's streets and closer to the legend he would become.

The hard work paid dividends as Rodtang began dominating Thailand's competitive Muay Thai scene, building an incredible record that would eventually reach 274 career wins. His reputation as a relentless, entertaining fighter who brought crowds to their feet made him impossible to ignore when ONE Championship came calling.

In August 2019, the culmination of years of sacrifice and adaptation arrived when Rodtang faced Jonathan Haggerty for the ONE Flyweight Muay Thai World Title. The victory didn't just earn him a championship belt — it announced to the world that the scared provincial boy had become the most exciting striker on the planet.

For “The Iron Man,” the emotion was too much to contain when the belt was placed over his shoulder.

"I am very happy, and I am glad about my performance. [Winning the World Title] is something that every athlete dreams of, and today I made it,” he told Mitch Chilson in the center of the ring, just moments after accomplishing the life-changing feat.

What followed was a reign of dominance that redefined what it meant to be a Muay Thai superstar. Rodtang's six successful title defenses weren't just wins; they were masterclasses in entertainment, technical brilliance, and warrior spirit that elevated him from champion to global icon. His 17 victories in ONE Championship represent more than statistics; they're testimonies to the power of perseverance and adaptation.

Now 28 years old, "The Iron Man" stands at another crossroads. The upcoming clash with Nong-O Hama at ONE 173 represents a meeting of titans – the greatest flyweight Muay Thai champion in ONE history facing the greatest bantamweight champion in a battle for vacant gold. For Rodtang, it's a chance to reclaim the title that helped define his legacy while proving that his best years remain ahead of him.
